DIY Desktop Rack Mount

by Ray aka @podcasthelper on February 20, 2012

I tackled another DIY podcast studio project today and I’m happy with the results thus far. This is a desktop rack mount. Next steps will be to add two more mounts so that it can be extended to hold two additional pieces of audio hardware (to be determined) and a coat of paint (wrinkled black).

I created this because it couldn’t be purchased. This is the smallest rack mount for a desktop that I’ve seen. This unit is only 13″ tall, fitting standard rack units (19″ wide). I also included a base that tilts the mixer towards the user making it much easier to operate and monitor. [click to continue…]

Audio compression tutorials

by Ray aka @podcasthelper on February 15, 2012

I’ve spent hours culling through all the video tutorials I could find to help you get a better understanding of specific audio production concepts.

The videos on this page all deal with the concept of compression and help you understand how to go about using this effect in your audio editing. Underneath each video, I’ve described what, for me, was the primary takeaway from each video (i.e. what made me post it here).

William gives a great breakdown of the basics, explaining compression controls very clearly. His demo is on a drum track but you get a chance to really hear what he’s talking about.

Remove Room Reverb from Your Podcast Recordings with a Plugin.

by Ray aka @podcasthelper on April 8, 2011

Post image for Remove Room Reverb from Your Podcast Recordings with a Plugin.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Here is some audio from a test I ran using a plugin that claims to remove echo from your recordings. In other words, a plugin to help podcasters with large empty rooms facing the challenge of getting the resulting reverb out of their recordings. When listening to this, you’ll want to make sure to wear some good headphones so that you can hear the reverb in the room.

The plugin seems to work pretty well which is quite an accomplishment however at over $50, I don’t think I would purchase it. But that is still cheaper than sound proofing your studio.

You can download and try the De-Verb plugin for yourself at the Sound Performance Lab website.

If you enjoy the demo, “Likes” are appreciated but make sure to let me know in the comments what you think overall. Would this be helpful for your recordings?

Powerpress 2.0 and HTML5

by Ray aka @podcasthelper on March 15, 2011

The Powerpress plugin for WordPress was updated a few days ago. This plugin does much more than you need it to and can be used in many different ways.

One of it’s most exciting new features is the ability to place an html5 player on your site, essentially making your podcast non-flash or Apple friendly. [click to continue…]

On a daily basis I answer how-to podcasting questions on twitter (@PodcastHelper) and in most cases each question is answered in 140 characters of less. However on occasion I want to provide a much more lengthy answer and that’s when I turn to email to answer questions that might have several answers or just need [...]
