Audio compression tutorials

by Ray aka @podcasthelper on February 15, 2012

I’ve spent hours culling through all the video tutorials I could find to help you get a better understanding of specific audio production concepts.

The videos on this page all deal with the concept of compression and help you understand how to go about using this effect in your audio editing. Underneath each video, I’ve described what, for me, was the primary takeaway from each video (i.e. what made me post it here).

William gives a great breakdown of the basics, explaining compression controls very clearly. His demo is on a drum track but you get a chance to really hear what he’s talking about.

On this episode I talk about how to post your podcast feed to facebook automatically including an audio player and how to keep your podcast alive after you stop producing it and paying for hosting.

I also discuss the differences between using a hardware versus software based compressor/limiter/gate. This is a non-essential piece of equipment and all of it’sprocesses can be handled in post production, however there are some benefits to using a real one.

When you’re deciding on what kind of mixer to get for your podcast there are several things to consider before making your purchase. I run through the most important things I think you should be looking for in a mixer that will be used for producing podcasts.

Some of the things I like to have in a mixer include USB 2.0 or better, insert channels to properly attached effects processors, real faders, mute buttons, and a few more things you’ll hear about on this episode.

Where do you find statistics about your podcast? I hear this question often and with it usually comes confusion about what exactly is going on with the stats you get from Feedburner. On this episode I talk all about the different places to find stats for your show and why Feedburner may not be your best option.

I also talk about my new piece of podcasting gear, an MDX4600 compressor/limiter/gate, and more info about Feedburner.

We also hear from Corey from the Average Joe Show, who called in some feedback regarding the live streaming episode.
