ID3 artwork is your podcast’s logo (see mine on the right) that gets inserted into every episode( mp3) file you create (see below for the differences between show level artwork and episode level (i.e. ID3)).
When designing your show’s artwork there are special specifications to be aware of.
1. Image size should be square (300 x 300 or 600 x 600) pixels.
2. Total file size should be less than 200 kb.
3. Images should be in JPEG and PNG formats with an RGB color space.

Thanks for the info. Question on JPEG.
You mentioned about size, what about color 65536 or 256 or 16 or any size? Also what about DPI?
Here’s the 2017 specs from the Apple help page: High quality artwork attracts new subscribers to your podcast. We recommend including a title, brand, or source name as part of your artwork.
Artwork must be in the JPEG or PNG file formats and in the RGB color space with a minimum size of 1400 x 1400 pixels and a maximum size of 3000 x 3000 pixels at 72 DPI.
As for color depth (?) is that what the number is? I would use the minimum possible just to try and keep the total file size down because you probably want an image that is max res. at 3000x3000px but less than 500KB.
